like a pupil waiting

like a pupil waiting
for the master's cane
i stand aghast to wince
before i feel the pain.

with outstretched open palm
and face portraying calm
i will take the welts
inflicted by cane or belt.

and once the moment comes
like a crack to break the hum
of the still stagnant fear
there bursts forth my rebirth

and i shall run
freed from my remand
to brightly greening meadows
away from your lingering shadow.
